A further plea for the introduction of conscription in New Zealand, so that future echelons of the {Special Force for duty overseas may be filled as required, was made by the Mayor of Ashburton (Dr. G. X. Miller) at the presentation of the Ashburton Trotting Cup. When officials assembled in the birdcage at the end of the Cup event the president of the club (Mr. H. F. Nicoll) referred to the presence of a number of men in uniform, who were on final leave, and said the whole country wished them well in their work overseas. The Mayor made similar reference and said that mention of the fact that the men would soon be leaving New Zealand brought forward the question of recruiting for the forces. “I must say again, what 1 really think is the issue to-day,” he said. ‘‘lt is time we had conscription.''
