North Star Delayed by Weather
ADMIRAL BYRD’S TRIBUTE TO HOSPITALITY Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Jan. 2. The North Star was to have sailed this evening for the Antarctic, but owing to strong south-west wind creating heavy seas outside the heads her departure for the Far tiouth was delayed till an early hour to-morrow morning. Word received by radio from the Bear of Oakland during tho day stated she was already among the ice about a week’s sail from Dunedin. The North Star is expected to reach the ice barrier in eight or ten days’ time. After sho has left the members of the expedition and her valuable cargo on the Antarctic continent she will sail for Valparaiso to take on board further supplies for the men at the two bases. Admiral Byrd, in a farewell message, stated: “We always look forward with great anticipation to our visits to New Zealand, and it is with keen regret that we leave. New Zealanders are the friendliest people in the world, and !n particular we give our deep and enduring appreciation to their wonderful hospitality.”
