SOUTH ISLAND CENTENNIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Per Press Association. TIMARU, Jan. 2. With no major upsets so far the second day’s play in the South Island Centennial tennis tournament was continued in fine weather and produced interesting play. The men’s singles championship will see an all-Canterbury semi-final while it appears that Angas and Brown and Pattinson and Penfold will contest tho doubles final. The final of tho women’s singles will be betAveen Miss D. Miller (North Otago), second on the New Zealand ladder, and Miss Thelma Poole, ranked No. 1 Canterbury. Results:— Men’s singles,—Quarter-finals: C Angas (Canterbury) beat M. Soutcr (Canterbury), 6 —4, 6 —o; A. *D. Btoavii (Canterbury) beat B. Souter (Canterbury), 6—2, 6 —2; R. Pattinson (Canterbury) beat P. Burning (South Canterbury), 6—l, B—3; C. Penfold (Canterbury) beat W. Smith (Otago), 2—6, 6—l, 6 —3. Women’s singles. —Semi-finals: Miss D. Miller (North Otago) beat Mrs. Hatherlcy (Canterbury), 6 —2, 6—3; Miss T. Poole (Canterbury) beat Miss K. Armstrong, 6—o, 4 —6, 6—3. WELLINGTON CHAMPIONSHIPS Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 2. The Wellington LaAvn Tennis Association’s annual championship tournament Avhich began on Saturday and was contiued on Monday concluded at Miramar to-day with the excoption of the mixed doubles finals. The events were as follows: A Grade. —Men’s singles: D. G. France. Men’s doubles: France and N. V. Edwards. Women’s singles: Miss J. Douthett. Women’s doubles; Mesdames D. G. France and Dykes, B Grade.—Men’s singles: A. M. Johns. Men’s doubles; A. Henderson and J. Manning. Women’s singles: Miss J. Carrell. Women’s doubles: Misses Adams and Henderson. Mixed doubles: Dunn and Miss Monkman. C Grade.—Men’s singles: D. Manning. Women’s singles: Miss D. Monk. Boys’ singles: R. McKenzie. Girls’ singles; Miss P. Longton. WAIKATO CHAMPIONSHIPS HAMILTON, Jan. 2. Most of the matches in the Waikato tennis tournament were concluded today. Miss Margaret Beverley retained the singles title, defeating Miss C. Buckley 6—3, 6—o. Misses Margaret and Nessie Beverley retained the doubles title, defeating Misses C. Buckley and B. Potter 10—8, 6—2. In the men’s final J. Roach defeated D. B. Livingstone 4 —6, 6 —4, 6 —2, 6—3.
