U.S. “PIPE DREAM” United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. NEW YORK, Jan. 1. Mr. Carl Vinson, chairman of the Naval Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, announced that hearings on the Bill, which seeks the construction of 95 combataiit and 31 auxiliary vessels, will begin on January 8. He added that the committee would explore a proposal for 80,000tons super bnttloships mounting 20-inch guqs. The correspondent of the United Press of America, in a message from Washington, states that a sentiment is developing in Congress for increasing the size of two 45,000-ton ships for which funds are already allocated. Tho correspondent adds that the Navy has been asked to submit estimates on craft up to 65,000 tons. The Washington correspondent of the New York Times says that Congressional agitation to build warships up to 80,000 tons is receiving little if any support in naval circles. Mr. Vinson said that personally he feels the idea is a pipe dream. Tho ships would cost 150,000 million dollars. It would also be necessary to enlarge the Panama Canal and provide a new dry dock.
