Road Courtesy Reduces Accidents
HOLIDAY TOLL IN VICTORIA United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright, Received Tuesday, 9.50 j.w. MELBOURNE, Jan. 2. The Christmas and New Year holiday season ended with a total of 43 accident deaths, compared with 60 last jear. Road accidents caused 22, compared with 30, and drownings nine compared with 21. The decline in road deaths is attributed by the police to greater road courtesy, the result of an intensive prenoliday campaign. The police traffic control superintendent says he noticed a definite improvement in road manners this year. “Road users realise that it is better to be careful than spend the holidays in hospital. I think tho improvement is due to the persistent education of road users. " The position is all the more satisfactory because an unbroken spell of perfect weather has been experienced throughout the holiday period, attracting a vast number-of cars on tho roads.
