Shirley Temple in Story of the Northwest
SUSANNAH OF THE MOUNTIES (State: Coming Friday week.) A horde of savage Indiana attacked a tiny outpost garrison of tho Canadian Northwest Mounted Police in “Susannah of the Mounties,” a 20th Century-Fox drama that an audience of widely varying composition cheered to the thrilling end. The heroic exploits of the Mounties in protecting the constuction of the Canadian Pacific Railroad on its push to the west from the outraged redmen is an exciting adventure romance and a highly unusual vehicle for its star, Shirley Temple. But the fans (and this reviewer) went for it big; it definitely is the most entertaining picture of the star voted four successive times the world’s favourite. Featured in the romantic roles are Randolph Scott, who makes a real heman Mountic, and Margaret Lockwood, tho lovely star of “The Lady Vanishes. ” A charming highlight of the story is Shirley’s friendship with a young Indian brave, played by Martin Good Rider, 13-year-old Blackfeet. They ride together, havo great fun with a real Indian danco and make a “treaty.” A dozen Blackfeet Indians were brought to Hollywood for this film to augment tho largo cast including J. Farrell, MacDonald, Maurice Moscovich, Moroni Olsen, Victor Jory and Lester Matthews. William A. Seiter’s direction gives tho screen play by Robert Ellis and Helen Logan a fast, exciting pace. The story by Fidel La Barba and Walter Ferris is based on the book by Muriel Denison. Kenneth Macgowan was associate producer.
A irginia Grey, who does a good acting job with "Wallace Beery in “Thunder Afloat,” has been rewarded with the feminine lead in Eddie Cantor's “Forty Little Mothers.”
