Manawatu Tournament Opens FIRST FOUR ROUNDS OF SECTION PLAY With, a record number of players participating, the Manawatu Bowling Centre’s New Year pairs tournament, which is expected to last for the better part of the week, was commenced yesterday in fine but overcast weather. Five city greens are in use and on each 14 pairs arc playing. Four rounds of section play were completed yesterday, aud with a further four to-day, all pairs with five or more wins will take part in the post-section play, which is to commence on Wednesday. Clubs outside the centre are well represented in the tournament, a notable entry being that of Mr. C. C. Clark, of Suva. A welcome was extended to the players at each of the greens, those speaking being: Messrs. J. A. Nash (president of the centre) and R. Hood, at the Hokowhitu green; A. Cooksley and L. G. Berry, Takaro; R. H. Billens, Manawatu; E. Bary and A. E. Lynch, Northern; H. G. Shouler and W. Mouldey, Palmerston North. All the greens played well, although tricky conditions were experienced on one or two. There were many close encounters during the day and an extra head had to bo played in several instances.
