went; up and his supporters had no further interest, save to watch Haupongi win with ease from Joe Louis. The winner was a maiden at time of starting. Haupongi ran up to the leaders, Buenzovi and Battle Pomp, at the five furlongs, whero Kohika was next. On the homo turn Haupongi was two lengths ahead of Kohika, Euenzori, Battle Pomp and Joo Louis. Tho last-named finished best of the bunch, four lengths behind Haupongi. Kohika was a neck behind Joe Louis, with Battle Pomp half a head further away. Lacan was fifth. Esperance Bay was backed down to odds on for tho Rata Hack Hardies, but Limbohm won well from High Peer. Golden Ridge ran off at the first hurdle, and Baron Bold led past the stands from High Peer, Forest Glow and Esperanco Bay. Limbohm moved up from tho rear at tbo six furlongs and Forest Glow ran through to follow Baron Bold along the back. On the home turn Baron Bold was just m front

of Forest Glow, Limbohm and High Peer, and at the last fence Limbohm and High Peer ran past the leader, Limbohm winning by two lengths from High Peer, with Baron Bold a similar distance back. There was a gap to the favourite and Forest Glow. King’s Mark was better backed than Boyal Consort in the Juvenile Handicap, but they finished in the reverse order. Nationalist was slow to move and at the end of a furlong Santa Lucia led from King’s Mark, Boyal Consort and Lambourn. Boyal Consort lod into the straight from Santa Lucia and Kings Mark, and the Laughing Prince filly lasted well to hold off a challenge from King is Mark and win by threo’quarters of rjength.- A length and-a-half back • was Lambourn, with Triple Crown and Santa Lucia next. . Three lengths back was Coloney Bogey, with Tidewaiter fourth nad Old Surrey and The Buzzer next. Laughing Lass, favourite for the Bailway Handicap, proved tho first successful favourite of the day. The Smiler and First Chapter led Laughing Lass and The Bigot down the back. Laughing Lass ran up beside The Smiler crossing tho top, with The Bigot outside them and Bussian Ballet com-

ing through. The Bigot ran off the course at the turn, and Laughing Lass hit the front, holding off Bussian Ballet by three lengths, with First Chapter four lengths back, ahead of The Smiler. Backers of Brazil in tho New Year Handicap lost nearly half their investments when the favourite was outstaycd by Benascor. To Oriko and Brazil ■wore tho early leaders from Benascor, and along the back they wero followed by Thrasos, Chere Amie, Girl Pot and Richelieu Pearl. Brazil led Te Oriko into the straight, hut Benascor came from five places back to win by half a length. Brazil just beat Chore Amie by a head, with Segra a nose away. Then camo ; Thrasos and Te Oriko. . There was another good field for the . concluding event and Boyal Sign hung . on gamely to score from Military Maid, Debretts and Dark Eagle in a close 1 finish.
