Manawatu Beat Wellington EASY FIRST-INNINGS VICTORY An easy victory on the first innings was obtained by Manawatu representative cricketers against Wellington in a two-day match which was concluded at the Sportsground, Palmerston North, yesterday. To Wellington’s total of 233 Manawatu replied with 350 for seven wickets, several of tho batsmen running up large scores. Wellington batted first and the innings was remarkable for the ninth wicket stand in which J. Fortune and E. O’Neill, the Wellington skipper, were partnered. The visitors had only met with mediocno success, the two Manawatu fast bowlers, Downes and Shailer, keeping the batsmen subdued. With only 95 runs on tho board for the loss of eight wickets, the bowlers appeared to be well on top,but by this tirno they were tiring. When O’Neill joined Fortune he attacked the bowling with vigour and the latter was also inspired to open out. However, O’Neill scored twice as quickly, getting well under tho slow bowlers put on to give tho fast ones a spell. He sent no fewer than five over the fence and seven to the boundary. The fieilding of the Manawatu men was not too clever at times. A particularly disastrous over as far as Manawatu was concerned was when J. Gallichan, the Manawtu skipper, tried his luck, being hit for 26. He had the good sense not to persist. However, Gallichan retrievel his reputation a little later when he caught O’Neill in the slips. It was a spectacular onehanded catch, the reach for the flying ball sending him off his balance. The O’Neill-Fortune partnership added 129 runs and saved the day for Wellington. When they took up the running yesterday morning with a little more liveliness in the pitch, Manawatu set about getting runs with determination and by the time the second wicket had fallen 163 runs were on the board. With the fourth wicket down Wellington’s total had been left well behind, the Manawatu tally being 305. They went on to amass 350 before play wss discontinued. In securing the fine total of 91 Pollit,t hit no fewer than 12 fours. Northover was the only batsman to notch a six. McVicar did particularly well to get 84. Other good scores were those of Edwards, who made 31, and Miller with 46. WELLINGTON First Innings A. Donald, b Shailer 0 J. Fay, b Downes .. • • 13 H. Osborn, 1.b.w., b Shailer •••••• 24 P.
