ESCAPED GERMAN PASTORS 20 In England Hoping For Ordination LONDON. It is revealed that there are in the United Kingdom at the moment 20 German pastors who escaped from Germany last year when religious persecution was intensified by the Nazis. One of them was formerly curate to Pastor Niemoeller. These pastors have been taught English and are hoping to obtain duty in the Anglican or Presbyterian Churches. Unfortunately for them, many Anglican curates have lost their appointments through the cutting down of congregations in London and the largs towns bv evacuation. The Rev. W. W. Simpson, general secretary of the Christian Council for Refugees from Germany and Central Europe, states that the German pastors are at present being supported by the council. They are in homes in various parts of England, and are giving their services wherever possible. “These pastors were brought to England by the Bishop of Chichester after he had been in touch with the Home Office here for some time,” said Mr Simpson. “Some are hoping to be ordained in the Church of Englad, and others wish to become missionaries, but the war has put a stop to the sending abroad of missionaries. Most of the pastor? belong to the German Confessional Church. “One has been lecturing at a number of English colleges, and has been ■on the staff of an Anglican theological college. Two others have preached at intercession services for refugees in England. One is in Bloomsbury House with the Church of England Committee. His particular work is to look after the refugees in London.
