STILL MORE NEEDED An increase in the percentage of tambing in the past season is shown in the Dominion estimates published in the current number of the Abstract of Statistics. The Dominion average rate is 85.26 per cent., compared with 84.64 per cent in 1938 and 88.71 per cent, in 1937. The highest figure in the past five years was obtained in 1936. when the percentage w-as 90.52. It is considered that the severe winter and dry condi lions which prevailed in the late summer and autumn months adversely affected the current season's lambing in the South Island, where the average rate of lambing was estimated at 86.29 per cent, compared with 90.10 per cent, in 1938 and 91.35 per cent. In 1037. The North Island estimate, however, rose from 81.11 per cent, in 1938 to 84.40 per cent in the current season, but the figure is well below the 83.71 per cent, obtained In 1937. The following table shows the lambing estimates for the past three years and the actual number of lambs tailed in 1937 and 1938: Est.
