I From Our Own Correspondent. The hall was filled to its capacity ol Saturday evening, when the residents ol the district and friends of Private A Carmichael gathered together to fare well and make him a presentation. Private Carmichael has been a resident oi the district for a number of years and leaves with the first echelon to go overseas at an early date. The evening was spent in dancing, music being supplied by Mrs. Oliver, Miss J. Vcale. Miss J. Legg (Bainesse), Mr. D. Bailey and Mr. and Master Pallister, ol Petone. Mr. Pallister obliged with two songs. Mr. H. Procter carried out the duties of M.C. Prior to the presentation all the local members of the Returned Soldiers’ Association assembled on the stage. Mr. J. Cameron, president of the Sports Club, said Private Carmichael was Oroua Downs No. 1 soldier and all admired the fine example ho had set. Jle had always been ready to assist any function in whatever way he could, and all sincerely hoped he would come back when he would receive i grand welcome. Mr. Cameron then
' asked Private Carmichael to accept a wristlet watch from the people of the ’ district with all best wishes. Musical ! honours were then accorded him. Private Carmichael thanked Air. Cameron for his remarks and everyone for the grand gift they had given him. He hoped it would not be long before he was back with them again. Personal. Miss Edith Thomson is spending a holiday at Lockwood. Mr. and Airs. F. Aloffalt have as their guests Air. and Airs. Pallistcr and their son and daughter of Petone. Air. and Airs. C. Aliss Iris Procter (Kairauga) spent c the Christmas holidays with her parents. Aliss Alargarct Sim has finished her ( Training College course and takes up a t position in Palmerston North at the be- c ginning of the school term. I Air. A. Sports Club.
At the annual meeting of the Oroua Downs Sports Club Mr. J. O. Cameron occupied the chair. The balance-sheet disclosed a healthy position financially. It is hoped that the club will have as successful a year again for 1940. The election of officers resulted as follows: Chairman, Mr. J. O. Cameron; secretary, All. R. Gates; vice-presidents, Alessrs. V. Bird, E. Christensen, H. Oliver, J. Funnell, F. A. Alills, A. Jamieson, H. Procter, T. A. Graviman, W. Gordon, A. Thomson, E. Conlan; auditor, Air. P. G. Cope; hall committee, Aressrs. W. A. Gordon, At. Alills, A. Thomson, K. Cotton, J. E. Dench, J. A. Conlan, A. J. Dench. The election of officers brought the meeting to a close except for a report from the dates committee, who have claimed March 9 as the day to hold the sports.
