OFFICIAL KNITTING DIRECTIONS Short Helmet: The pattern for a short Balaclava helmet issued by the Royal Air Force Comforts Committee is as follows. Materials Required. Two oz. 4-ply fingering Royal Air Force blue, or nearest colour. Four needles, size No. 7. Cast on 90 stitches. Knit 2, purl 2 for 5 inches, then proceed as follows: Knit 2, purl 2 for 24 stitches. Place these on a piece of wool or stitchholder, for the face. Work 50 rows of plain knitting on the remaining 72 stitches. Then knit 47, slip 1, knit I, pass slip stitch over and turn. Knit 23, slip 1, knit 1, slip stitch over and turn. Repeat 2nd row until all stitches are worked on tho needlo (24 stitches). Knit 24 stitches, pick up 28 for right side of face. Knit 2, purl 2 for chin. For left side of face, pick up 28 stitches. There should bo 104 stitches in all. Knit 2, purl 2 on these stitches for 12 rows. Cast off in usual way.
