HASTINGS v. MANAWATU The Manawatu-Hastings cricket match which concluded yesterday in a win for Manawatu by a narrow margin, was played towards the end in the rain so anxious were the local team to get tho victory. Showers interrupted the game throughout the day. Hastings were unable to repeat their bright batting of the lirst innings owing to the altered state of the wicket following the overnight downpour. Manawatu wanted 119 to win and when they discovered time getting short, they carried on in spite of the elements. It was as well they did so as the winning runs came in the last over before 6 o'clock. Some of the batsmen threw their wickets away in the endeavour to get runs. Details were:— HASTINGS. A win for tho home team by 69 runs on the first innings was the result of the Hawke’s Bay-Manawatu representative cricket match completed to-day. Before rain interrupted play yesterday, Hawke’s Bay had been dismissed for 250, and to-day the visitors faced a fairly formidable task on a wicket made uncertain by further heavy rain overnight. In spite of another hold-up for several hours following the luncheon adjournment, Manawatu were dismissed before stumps were drawn for 181, or which W. Pollitt made 83 and C. McVicar 23. The most successful bowlers were Robinson (3 for 54), Pirie (3 for 23), and Dean (2 for 43). The visitors made a disastrous start, Persson, ono of the opening batsmen, beiDg dismissed before the scoring had been opened, but his partner, McVicar, and Pollit, who came in first wicket down, retrieved the position. Both gave sound displays, but none of the others showed any confidence, and scoring was very slow. Robinson in particular gavo a good deal of trouble in the morning with bumping deliveries, and after a heavy downpour early in the afternoon the wicket becamo a big factor in the bowlers’ favour. A feature of the day’s play was the performance of the Hawke's Bay wicketkeeper, Askew, who stumped two batsmen and caught three. The fielding of both teams was very sound.
