Young Man Drowned On Christmas Day
BODY RECOVERED YESTERDAY Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dec. 20. The body of the young man who disappeared in the course of rescue operations on Christmas Day at Orewa Beach was discovered to-day lying among the rocks on the south side of the mouth of the Orewa River. He was Jack Bradshaw Johnston, aged 23 years, single, of Sandringham. Deceased was bathing on Christmas Day w'ith his sister, Betty Johnston, and a young woman companion. The young women were using a lido mat and air cushion and were waist deep in water at the mouth of the river when they got out of their depth and were carried seawards. Some men went to their rescue and brought them in to shallow' water when it was noticed that Johnston was missing. It is believed he was drowned in attempting to retrieve the lido mat.
