Tragic Hotel Fire in Queensland

A tragic-hotel fire occurred at Goomeri, 171 miles north-w« itom Brisbane, early on Saturday morning when nine persons perished and escaped.** 1 * taJUred " Eisht Twenty-three guests were trapped in the upper storey of the Grand Hotel, a large twostoreyed weatherboard building. Most of them tried to escape over the balcony. Two were killed leaping to the road while several were caught by men waiting below, including on eighteen months-old baby whose mother after crying out "Save my baby, * ’ was herself overcome by smoke and disappeared in the fiames. The licensee, Mr. John Parker died from hums and injuries after jumping to the bitumen road. His wife was burned to death, also a barmaid and a girl telephonist.
