HEALTHY CHRISTMAS TRADE

Woodville Businessses Experienced Good Week RUMOURS WERE UNFOUNDED Investigations made during the week have revealed that the volume of Christmas shopping ca/ried out in Woodville this year is as large, if not in some' cases, larger than for tho corresponding period last year. Enquiries of drapers elicited the information that they anticipated their returns for tho week to compare most favourably with the same period last year, when Christmas shopping reached high levels. In tho grocery trade there is no doubt that tho Christmas trade is as great if not greater than in last seasons, despite shortages in some lines. Booksellers and confectioners are also experiencing good trade and by midday to-day they hope to be up on last year’s Christmas week figures. Taken gonerally, this position is most surprising for tho general trend of talk a few weeks ago was that this festive season would lack the purchasing enthusiasm of previous years, with a consequent drop in business. The reverse has been the case, however, and the result has been most encouraging indeed. If Woodville’s Christmas shopping was equally as good as in previous years, then the same must be the case in other towns and cities, thus dispelling the rumours that this would be a quiet festive season as far as trade was concerned.
