Finland Not Birthday Present for Stalin!

FAILURE OF RED ARMY’S TERRIFIC OFFFENSIVE Received Friday, 1.55 a.m. LONDON, December 20. Whatever promises the Russian Army made, Finland is not among Stalin’s birthday presents. Observers agTee that yesterday’s terrific offensive yielded nothing, -while the Finns’ counter-offensive at Suomussalmi is reported to have resulted in the wiping out of two Soviet divisions and the killing of 20,000 Russians. A Leningrad war communique modestly declares: “On all fronts there were petty skirmishes between patrols, while in a number of districts, particularly the Karelian Isthmus, intensive artillery duels occurred. Soviet planes made reconnaissance flights.” It isn’t safe to discuss the Russo-Finnish war in Moscow although it is darkly hinted that the Red Army’s special birthday effort is scheduled for to-day, not yesterday.
