Trial Gallops at Awapuni
PLOUGH WAS POPULAR TRACK YESTERDAY Milo gallops by Tlie Buzzer and Colonel Bogey, and also Aurora’s Star; seven furlongs by Du Maurier and by The Bigot; and five furlongs by Laughing Lass were the features of the final Trials at Awapuni. Most of the work was done on the plough but several horses were speeded up on the course proper where tho going was hard and the flags over 40 feet out. On the Plough. The Buzzer with a big pull in tho weights beat Colonel Bogey (Broughton) over a mile, and Thrasos (Stewart), who took part in tho trial, was not far away at the finish. They were given time to find their feet but ran to the three in 1.5 and they finished strongly to complete in 1.47. Tho gallop suggested that Thrasos would have more than an outside chance in the High-weight. Aurora’s Star (Tattersall) was going more easily than Tidewaiter (Morris) at the end of a mile, the last seven of which took 1.35 2-5, anl they came home well to cover the last three in 42. Aurora’s Star is very well at present and she might provo tho best of the light-weights. The Bigot (Morris), picked up by Royal Sign (Jarvis) at the half mile, sprinted seven in 1.31 3-5, working with all his brilliance. He is in rare order for Manawatu. Brazil (Temperton) worked better than he has for a long time when he beat Sudan (Broughton) over seven tho last six of which took 1.21. Old Surrey (Broughton) was never going at top over seven which took him 1.36; and Classform (Tarsons) and Caution (Jenkins) wore companions in an easy seven which took 1.35. High Peer (Waddell) woTked well over a mile in 1.51. Du Maurier (Williamson), another cup candidate, made light of seven furlongs, which he ran in 1.33. He travelled very fast to tho three and he was not ridden out. He is a very fit horse. Hunting Lore (Redstone), with a pull in the weights, beat Malik Kafur (Morris) over five in 1.6 1-5, and Laughing Lass, with Pratt tip, took 1.5 3-5 in a similar work out. La Bru (Morris) had it on Snigger (Jarvis) at the end of five in 1.7, and Pas de Cheval (Waddell) was timed to run the last four of five in 53. An interesting gallop over six was that of Old Bill ( Tattersall) and Earl Colossus (Broughton), who were going easily together after taking 1.22. Old Bill began brilliantly and was then restrained. Alchemic moved well over six in 1.23 2-5; Rollaway (Chaplin) recorded similar time; and Flammarion (Broughton) pulled hard over a good working gallop over a mile. On the Course Proper Silvanus (Waddell) was just in front of Raeburn (H. Stewart) at the end of a mile run in 1.48. This gallop was on the course proper and after a slow start they were timed to cover the last three in 40 2-5. It was a fine trial, both horses going well. Santa Lucia (Temperton) sprinted four in 55, 40 last three; King's Mark (Goulsbro) came home from the three in 39 2-5; Parian (Waddell) and Vascones (Tattersall) ran five in 1.5 2-5; Renascor finished in front of Israel after soven in 1.35 2-5; Little Dorrit (Buchanan) was timed to run the last three of four in 38; and Sceptre (Broughton) went five in 1.8. Godburn sprinted five in 1.7 and Kena and Debretts were among those let off with light tasks. Additional riding engagements are: S. Waddell: Silvanus. H. N. Wiggins: Parian. P. Atkins: Little Dorrit.
