Women’s Institutes
Mrs. F. M. Bradley presided at the December meeting and extended a welcome to a large number of visitors, also Christmas greetings to all present. A Christmas telegram was received from Airs. Danielson, a past member. The programme for the day was in the hands of the members who arranged a Christmas celebration. It was arranged to enter in the Institute competition at the forthcoming Feilding .Show. An Institute baby, Antony Douglas Lewer, was presented with a Post Office Savings Bank book and box. Hrs. H. Al. Whisker was elected to tiie chair and extended Christmas greetings to the president and members. Mrs. K. H. Dowrick, of Feilding, gave a very enjoyable talk on gardens, fcine spoke of the garden in relation to our national crisis and dealt largely with the garden as a means of bringing peace to our minds. She went on to say: “In our homes we serve our country for contented homes make a better town. Gardening made for contentment—we must cease worrying. We need a sense of beauty so let us make our gardens bright this summer —our home something husbands will be proud of—and then go on to plan for the autumn and spring.” The value of repetition and various col our schemes were dealt with, the speaker receiving a very hearty vote of thanks at the conclusion. The children’s choir from the school under Miss J. E. Wight was present and led the singing of the Christmas carols “Oh Come All Ye Faithful,” “Silent Night, Holy Night” and ‘ ‘ Hark, the Herald Angels Sing. ’ ’ The choir also sang “Fairy Yale” and “Erisky Love Lilt.” Airs. Graeme Parker sang “The Holy City,” accompanied by Miss D. Parker, aud Mrs. D. McDowall gave a recitation. One competition was a presentation box of flowers (fruit allowed), the boxes to be sent to hospital patients. This resulted in a very largo entry of beautiful exhibits and was judged by Airs. Dowrick. The result was: Mrs. W. E. Thomas 1, Aliss Olive Thomas 2, Airs. J. B. Young and Mrs. J. J. Hume equal 3. Five of these boxes were sent to local sick aud aged ladies and the remainder to hospital patients. A plate of gingernuts was won won by Mrs. J. B. Young 1, Airs. A. Griffith 2. In a puzzle competition Airs. Dowrick and Aliss Hill were equal first. The hostesses were Alesdaines F. J. Rus-
sell, W. Ansin, C. Kendrick and F. Cheetham. The January meeting will celebrated by a picnic,
