Mt. Stewart Memorial to Pioneers
TENDER ACCEPTED FOR WORK Yesterday afternoon a meeting was held at Feilding of tho Mt. Stewart Pioneers’ Memorial executive of the Zone E. Centennial celebrations committee, Mr. J. Linklater (chairman) presiding. There were also present Messrs T. L. Seddon (Mayor of Feilding), W. Croucher, D. W. Reid, V. E. Smith, A. K. Drew, H. V. Bond and C. H. Tate (secretary). Several tenders wero received for the building of the memorial and after consideration it was decided to accept tho lowest. Tho successful tenderer was Mr. W. Wilkinson, of Feilding. It \)’as reported by Mr. Tate that with the exception of several small amounts aggregating £32, the local body allocations amounting to £550 had been accepted by those bodies concerned. With private canvassing yet to be completed the prospects of securing the total sum required appear bright. It is confidently anticipated that descendants of pioneers in the Manawatu district will wish to subscribe to this memorial commemorating their parents and from this source it is expected sufficient will be realised to make up the total sum required. Specially printed subscription lists have been prepared and handed to members of the committee. All subscribers to the cost of the memorial will have their names specially printed in a book to serve as a permanent record of tho part they took in providing this memorial to commemorate the pioneers of the whole of the Manawatu district. This record is to be placed iu the memorial for future public reference. The chairman and secretary were authorised to sign the contract and the supervision of the work will be in the hands -of Messrs Bond and Drew, engineer and clerk respectively of the Manawatu County Couucil.
