From Our Own OorresDondont 5 The school concert held last Wednesday • ,was an immense success, the hall being crowded to the doors. The proceedings . I opened by the rendering of two carols by |the upper classes. Aylmer Cresswell rene dered a pianoforte solo; recitations were [given by Thelma Taucher, James AlcSav--9 ' ney, Milton Harvey, Betty Robinson, Man- - |reen Hanaghan, L. Frith and Hugh Oxeni ham. A playette was given by Joan s Henaghan, Janet Oxenham, Patricia Rout [and Brian Eagle, and another by Lawrie P I Oden, Bobby Anderson and Alary Badger. - [A play was acted by pupils of standard 2, i / those in the cast being Joyce Ireland. • Sheila Taucher, Lloyd Cresswell, Peter 1 j Christiansen, lan Needham, Colin McCool, / Bobby Anderson, L. Frith and Carl Oden, s A character song was given by Dulcie s j Needham and Dulcie and Valerie Need:l [ham rendered two dances, Aliss June Scott e' accompanying. The lower room pupils n gave a rendering of the canoe song. Coni. jnie Wood and Lily Christiansen rendered n a carol in part, while Noel Robinson and .1 jAlilton Harvey sang. Songs were also reno dered by the senior pupils, the humorous > rendering of "John Brown’s Body” causr ing much merriment. A play was well r performed by Beryl Closey, Lily Christian1, sen, Desmond Newcombe, Len Satherley s and Ernest Hemmingsen. A farce caused ;1 [much hilarity, those taking part being r .senior pupils, Don Needham, John Coutts, i, Milton Harvey, Betty Robinson and i- | Thelma Taucher; the acting in this was d of a very good standard. Two songs were e rendered by Airs. Jones, who was accomo ! panied by Airs. E. L. Smith. A carol s closed the concert programme. Aliss J. t- | Wood played the accompaniments for i, (school songs. Air. Henaghan, chairman of a the committee, expressed delight at so ir j large a patronage and congratulated the ,s ; children arid the teachers on the proe gramme. He thanked all those who had © helped in any way towards the success of n the function. The chairman then distrijbuted the books, one to each child. Air. G. FI. Bennett’s special went to John Coutts (dux for 1939). Prizes were given to Will t. Bout and Betty Robinson for success in is [ticket selling. A pleasing function was is the presenting of a gift to Aliss Pearce by e Hugh Oxenham on behalf of the primers and standard 1 and 2 classes. Milton Hara . vey presented the headteacher, Mr. H. I Wood, with a gift from standards 3, 4 and s . .5, and Ken Puklowski presented a hook ;e on behalf of standard 6. Both teachers is thanked the children ror their kindly n l thought. Those scholars winning attendr- anee certificates for 1939 were Lily and !( 1 j Peter Christiansen, Irene Hodgson, Trevor :C j 1 Lawrence, Desmond Newcombe, MarJc Badger and Laurie Frith. The children r | were treated to a sit-down supper and the ls [committee desires to thank the Women’s v [lnstitute for arranging for this and superr. | vising. After supper dancing was indulged Ls Jn. Air. F. Eagle acted as AI.C. Eight ,r Form II pupils leave this year, all of whom n aro going on either to High Sclxool or i. Technical School. t- Air.
