Women’s Institutes
The Milson. Women’s Institute held their annual picnic in the beautiful grounds of Mrs R. McKenzie’s homo at Milson although the weather was very threatening it was very gratifying to see such a largo crowd of members. Competitions and games wero in full swing all the afternoon. Afternoon tea was served under the beautiful trees surrounding the grounds. At tho conclusion a very hearty vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs Murphy (president) to Mrs McKenzie for the use of her home. WHAKAKONOO. Mrs Johansen, president, presided over some 60 members and friends at the first meeting of the year. Tho gathering was a red letter one in the annals of the W. 1., in that menfolk were allowed to attend. Tho meeting was held in tho evening, and the attendance of men fully justified folding a similar affair later. The visitors present wero Mrs freeman, Misses Cranston and G. Taylor, and several children, while apologies [were received from Mrs Hasting and ' Miss Jordan. The president stated that the entry in the Fcilding Show had received very good marks. The roll call, sing say or pay, was an entertaining one, although a number of pennies wero gathered in. A musical competition played by Miss JL’yc was won by Miss M. Vauticr in the ladies’ section and Mr H. Gore in the men’s section. Musical monolugos given by a popular performer, Miss Cranston, accompanied by Miss G. Taylor, were thoroughly enjoyed. Later Miss Cranston held her audieuee in a most interesting talk on the recent Drama School held in Wellington. An amusing competition in which all participated, was drawing a pig. The winners were Mrs Burnett, and Mr Burnett. Nominations for committee and now due and may be sent to the secretary, at 299 Featherstone street, not later than 3rd March. Further competition results were:— Cherry pLurn jam, seniors: Mrs Fountain I, Mesdames YV, Byers 2, F. Smith 3; seven entries. iSingL ladies: Misses M. Vauticr 1, S. Speedy 2, R. Park 3; livp entries. One perfect lloiver: Married, Mrs Fafeita 1; 12 entries. Single, Miss Speedy 1; five entries. Men’s scones: Mr 1. Vautier 1, Mr J. Stuart 2; only entries. At a suitable juncture Mrs Johansen wished. Mrs Clapham goodbye from the W.l. and presented her with a gift. A gift to a member shortly to be married, Miss M. Pyc, was also presented the bride-to-be, thanking the W.l. for the thought. Hostesses who served supper were Mesdames D. Cresswell, G. {Shannon, M. Philip, Clapham, and Misses Vautier and {Speedy. Mr Knudseu spoke on the picnic which the W.l. and school are holding together. Tho date fixed is the first Saturday in March, and all are urged to attend. The W.l. committee will hold a meeting on Ist March to discuss matters. Mr Knudsen also returned thanks on behalf of the men, for a jolly evening. The next month’s competition is for three asters, and the committee are to be hostesses.
