As a sequel of the birthrate discussion in the Commons, Mr Ronald Cartland has been inundated wita tetters proposing marriage. He is sending out short formal acknowledgments ‘ * declining with thanks." The question of the birth-rate in Britan was discussed in the House of Commons on a motion submitted by Mr Ronald Cartland, expressing the opinion that the decline in the population possibly would endanger the maintenance of the Empire and urging the Government to institute an inquiry. Mr R. Pilkingtou (Conservative — Widnes, Lancashire), suggested a tax on bachelors. He said he had learned with horror that there were 206 bachelor members of the House (Cries of * * shame.") This was a situation the members should remedy, said Mr Pilkington. (Laughter).
