New Zealand Doctors To Confer This Month
Every two years a conference of tho New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association is held in one of the four main centres of the Dominion. It is Wellington’s turn to have the conference this year, and it is to be held under the presidency of Dr. T. D. M. Stout, of Wellington, in the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum Building, Buckle street, the opening day being February 23. Probably about 200 doctors and their wives from all parts of the Dominion will come to Wellington for the conference. The delegate from England is Sir Edmund Spriggs.
The conference, which will last the rest of the week, is to be opened by the Governor-General, Lord Galway, and on the first night there will be a reception by the Mayor, Mr T. *C. A. Hislop. At this function Dr Stout will deliver his presidential address, and will also be addressed by the Mayor and tho Minister of Health, the Hon. P. Fraser. The opportunity will bo taken at the gathering to present the Hunterian Medal to Dr F. O. Bennett, of Christchurch. The medal is awarded for an essay on a medical subject, and this is the first time it has been won by a doctor in Australia or New Zealand.
A comprehensive social programme lias been arranged for the entertainment of the delegates and their wives. The conference will adjourn for half a day to enable a golf tourney to be staged at Heretaunga and on the same day there will be a visit to Trenthnm racecourse. The social events will conclude with a ball to be given by Dr Stout and Mrs Stout.
On tho scientific side of tho conference one of tho main subjects for discussion is disease of the coronary arteries of the heart. This subject is to be discussed in all its aspects and it is of particular importance in modern times, owing to its relationship to compensation cases. . This aspect will bo (fealt with fully.
A number of new cinematograph films on medical subjects, which are being brought from overseas, arc to bo shown.
Of tho various sections of tho conference, the eye, ear, noso and throat dpDartment will be particularly well
represented, and a number of papeiX will bo given by specialists. Another subject of wide general interest will be some of the aspects of anaemia.
