machine betting in amebica Although the pari-mutuel turnover advanced in. most States in America last year, it was not so in Illinois. In that State Chicago, with six tracks, supplies practically all the racing, and investments for their total of 157 days dropped to approximately £6,426,000, as compared with £6,861,000 for 157 days the previous year. Last year Arlington Park came out best, averaging £59,550 for 30 days. In 1935 its average for a similar number of days was £61,170. There are no bookmakers on Chicago racecourses. OTHERS HAVE SOMETHING TO GROWL ABOUT TOO. New Zealand is not the only place where Racing Clubs are asked to an extraordinarily large amount by way of taxation. Last year Maryland’s four principal tracks paid a daily licence fee of £I2OO, which, as each club raced 25 days, meant £120,000 for the year. In addition there is a tax of one per cent, on the pari-mutuel turnover. Last year that gave the State over £63,000 from the four major tracks. In addition there is a tax of 15 per cent, on profits—if the clubs make any. Pimlico pays heaviest of any Maryland track, as in addition to the State tax of £I2OO there is a daily county tax of £6OO. Pimlico has the unenviable honour of being the heaviest taxed track it. the United States. He continues "Geitol is sure to go a fine race, but she has such a short run that the long Wood ville straight may prove her undoing if she has to go too soon. Arctic King, on the other hand, is admirably suited by the Wood ville track, on which he has previously won, and he is always liable first up after brief respites. Rona Bay too will find the Woodville track to her liking and she can never bo left out of any count, Chough a race just at present might help her. Siegmund is least fancied of the centre’s four aspirants, but if the track is hard and this race is selected in preference to the sprint he has the quality to spring an upset.’’ Gironde (Gascony—Valley Rose), an acceptor for the Maiden Plate at Waodville, is a brother to Ben Braggie and a year older. A maiden who is to make his debut at Woodville is Rolling Home, by Rowley from Six O’Clock, b> Provocation from Temperance, by BirxenlTead. The colt by Defoe from Expense purchased by Mr H. D.
