Awapuni Stables Are Well Represented at Woodville

YESTERDAY'S PROGRAMME WAS JTAIRLY LIGHT. Awapuni stables are well represented at the Woodville autumn meeting, which opens on Saturday, hut yesterday's programme was not as exciting as expected. The flags were fairly close to the rails, hut the course proper was dead and the times slow. Severe (W. J. Broughton) opened proceedings and she scampered o?er five furlongs in 1.8 2-5. Round Score (Broughton) was worked over a mile at a steady pace, sprinting the last three furlongs in 89 after taking 1.10 3-5 for the first five. Gay Molly (Broughton) had the Sky Blue—Markful colt (G. Tattersall) as a companion over half a mile and the last three furlongs took them 40 secs., Gay Molly finishing just a little better than the colt. Ingenuity (J. Chaplin) was galloped a mile, the last six furlongs taking her 1.24, and the last three 39. Waitohu (Chaplin) was given a similar task, completing the full distance in 1.52 and the last three furlongs in 42. Bun .Fight (Broughton) was not flat out at any stage to run six furlongs in I. 2-5. Alby (Tattersall) engaged in the open sprint at Woodville, ran the last five furlongs of a mile work-out in 1.8. Tail Light (D. Mansfield) and Old Surrey (Broughton) sprinted six furlongs in 1.20 3-5, the last three taking 39. Orient Dawn (Tattersall) beat Peach King (Broughton) over three furlongs cut out in 38isecs. Both are engaged in the Sapling Stakes at Woodville. Manawatu and his half-brother by Lackham were sprinted five furlongs, P. Rue being on the former, and Manawatu was in front at the post after having required 1.8 for the distance. The Crooner (Broughton) was sprinted half a mile, the Nigger Minstrel colt being clocked to run the last three in 38J secs, after a slow run first furlong. He looks well. With the Jumpers. Pango (W. J. McDowell) and Forest Glow (L. Parkes) were sent along over four hurdles, Pango outjumping Forest Glow at every fence. Pango and Wild Flower go north on Thursday for the second day of the Waikato meeting. W. J. McDowell will ride Pango. Catalogue, Bodyline and Corroboree, who have been entered for Woodville, were not worked with the early brigade 'yesterday morning. Dungarvan has been turned out for a short spell, but it is anticipated that he will be tuned up again in readiness for the Wellington meeting. Another that will have to be given a spell is Cloudy Bay, who was kicked on- the hock just before the running of the Nolan Cup. Martara is likely to be given a run over a sprint distance at the Rangitikei meeting. He has been given an easy time since his return from Taranaki but he will be got ready for Trentham. Flammarion (N. Voitre) was worked on one of the inner tracks, and his rider had his hands full to restrain him. It is intended that Flammarion should race on the second day of the Woodville meeting. Additional riding engagements for Woodville are:— J. Leach: Symcony. L. A. Pine.- Aurora's Love. G. Tattersall: Ingenuity, Orient Dawn, Alby and Old Surrey. WELL-KNOWN OWNER. MRS. SIMPSON'S RELATIVE. Major P. Kerr-Smiley, who left Sydney last week for England, is a wellknown patron of J. T. Jamieson's stable and occasional buyer at Trentham yearling sales. He is also brother-in-law to Mrs Simpson, whom the Duke of Windsor proposes to marry when her decree nisi for divorce is made absolute in April (states the Evening Post). The Major, according to an Australian report, married Maud Gaines Simpson, daughter of Mr Ernest L. Simpson, of New York. Major Kerr-Smiley has raced half a dozen or so horses in Australia and New Zealand during the last few years. The best performer among them was probably Persian, but the four-year-old Latharna may be a better. Since he resumed racing, when Jamieson's term of suspension was over, Latharna has won twice in half a dozen starts, his second success Doing in the Warwick January Handicap last month. He is a four-year-old son of Limond and Pomyris, the dam also of Pomp, and cost his owner 800 guineas at the Trentham sales. The Major's health was adversely affected by the war, and he now regularly escapes the English winter by going to Australia. He has left on his ieturn to England earlier than usual this year in order to attend the Coronation. He will not see Latharna under colours again till next summer.
