British Trade Figures
INCREASE IN EXPORTS (British Official Wireless.) Received Tuesday, 7 p.m. RUGBY, Feb. 15. The totals of British imports and exports for last month, despite the fact that there were five Bundays in that month, are the highest for any January since 1930. Last month’s figures are as follow:—lmports £75,580,736, exports £39,100,726, re-exports £5,076,029. Comparative figures for January, 1936, were:—lmports, £69,953,782, exports £34,459,583, re-exports £4,320,094. December figures were:—lmports £83,656,566, exports £40,515,632, re-exports £6,100,163. The relative increase in exports is now greater than imports. Tho contrary was the case during most of last year. The rate of increase in the visible adverse balance of trade has thus slowed down considerably, last month’s deficit of £31,404,000 being only £225,000 larger than 1936. Of the increase of £4,641,148 in British exports, no less than £3,250,000 was in manufactured goods. Increscs were shown by the coal trade, iron and steel industry and cotton trade.
