1937 Prospects Bright For Hollywood Stars
practically all of the current favourites in motion pictures will add to their popularity during 1937, according to indications in the film capital. Ranking stars, including Greta Garbo —who may or may not renew her contract—Fred MacMurray, Clark Gable, Kay Francis, Robert Taylor and Claudette Colbert, just to mention a few—have a very pleasant outlook. Gary Cooper opens the new year with two pictures which should add to his present popularity, these being. "The Plainsman” and "Souls at Sea.” Clark Gable flirts with the greatest role ever within his reach, that of Rhuett Butler in "Gono With the Wind.” Robert Taylor and Fred Macmuray are definitely on the up-grade, Taylor with "Camille” opposite Garbo and MacMurray with threo Paramount pictures, "Maid of Salem” which will also boost Claudette Colbert’s stock with the public; ‘‘Champagne Waltz/’ the Adolph Zukor Jubilee picture with Gladys Swarthout and "Swing High, Swing Low” with Carole Lombard. Miss Lombard is having three productions made ready for her. Paramount is preparing "I Met Him in Paris” for Miss Colbert. Bing Crosby has "Waikiki Wedding,” George Raft who recently settled casting difficulties with Paramount, is sharing honours with Cooper in "Souls at Sea.” Irene Dunne at the top after "Theordora Goes Wild,” has "High, Wide and Handsome” at Paramount to look forward to. Randolph Scott gets his biggest chance in this picture opposite her.
Paramount player Martha Raye is back from a vacation in Montana, where she visited her grandmother. Gary Cooper, Paramount star, is actually a "Soul at Sea” because his manager and right-hand man, Jack Moss, who was married recently, is out of town and Gary’s lost without him. <*> <S> <4 <S> Temporarily forsaking straight comedy characterisations, Charles Butterworth for the first time in his career essays a semi-serious role in "Rainbow On tho River,” RKO Radio’s musical which stars Bobby Breen, the juvenile singing wonder. In the new film, Lutterworth portrays a butler. <s> <s> <S> Una O’Connor and Beryl Mercer have been added to the cast of "Call It a Day,” which has just started production, according to word from Warner Bros, studio at Burbank, California. Miss O’Connor will be remembered for her work in "Cavalcade,” while Miss Mercer won distinction in ‘ ‘The Old Lady Shows Her Medals.” Olivia de Havilland is the star of tho new picture, which is adapted from the famous stage play by Dodie Smith. lan Hunter has the leading masculine role, and other members of the cast include Frieda Inescorf, . Frank Haines, and Bonita Granville. Arohie L. Mayo is directing the production. Alexander Korda was so delighted with the work of Gertrude Lawrence in her first important screen role, opposite Charles Laughton in "Rembrandt,” that he immediately signed tho actress for a leading role in his forthcoming picture "Men Are Not Gods,” with Miriam Hon kina*
