Traffic Signs to One Pattern

CONFERENCE RECOMMENDATIONS WELLINGTON, Feb. 13. Though not so urgently important, perhaps, as uniform rules for moving traffic, uniformity in traffic guidance signs has for long been talked of, but so far has not been achieved. However, decisions made at a conference in Wellington yesterday of representatives of tho Main Highways Board, the Transport Department, the larger cities, and the autoraobilo associations and motor unions have brought real uniformity in traffic signs throughout the Dominion considerably nearer. The recommendations of tho conference are to gj forward to the Minister of Transport (Hon. R. Semple) for confirmation before they are put into force. Most important of tho subjects dis cussed were parking signs and pedestrian crossing signs. Agreement was reached on the subject of parking signs, it being decided that all signs should be rectangular, 12 inches by 18 inches in size, with a large letter ”P” on top, with the parking time allowance given underneath in minutes up to one hour. Where parking is prohibited the sign is to carry a large letter “P” at the top, with the letters “N.P. ” inscribed below. On the question of pedestrian crossing signs, no finality was reached, and delegates are to refer the question back to their organisations to submit further suggestions to the department. General agreement was reached on signs for dangerous crossings, hospitals, schools, and for places where roads are under repair. All road traffic signs are to be in black lettering on a yellow background. Exception was taken to the compulsory stop signs at railway crossings, the opinion being that they were more often ignored than observed. It was decided that signs of this kind should not be erected unless they were absolutely necessary.
