Swept Overboard But Grabbed a Rail

Narrow Escape for Bandsman WHEN CROSSING COOK STRAIT Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. To be swept from the deck of the Matangi and to clutch successfully at the rail as he went overboard was tho experience of R. A. Shearer, a compositor, aged 27, of Island Bay, when the vessel was crossing Cook Strait on Saturday. Shearer, who is a member of the Institute Band, was making the crossing during a special daylight trip of the Matangi on Saturday for the purpose of taking bandsmen to the New Zealand championships at Nelson. The vessel experienced a rough trip in Cook Strait, there being a heavy sea running. Shearer was on the lower after deck and was walking from one side to the other when the vessel gave a sudden lurch, which sent him sliding on tho wet deck. His shin struck a raft seat and he went hurtling over the side of the boat.. Luckily he had the presence of mind to grasp one of the lower iron railings. He was thus saved from a headlong flight to tho heavy sea, from which rescue under the conditions would have been impossible.
