Hot Days Are Not School Days

EDUCATION BOARD CHAIRMAN WOULD LIKE ALTERATION (Special to “Times.”) NAPIER, Feb. 12. That in such ft climate as Hawke's Bay’s it is too hot for primary-school children to begin their school year before the middle of February, and that one mid-year holiday should take the place of the two term holidays, ia tho opinion of the chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, Air G. A. Aladdison. At this morning’s meeting of the board he moved that a recommendation in these terms should be made to the Education Department, but his motion was withdrawn in favour of another to the effect that lie should move his motion at the board's Alarch meeting, to enable the question to re- i ceive full consideration. Air Maddison voiced hlf opinion after the board had considered a letter from the department stating that all schools were to open on Alonday j March 1, and that all teachers were to attend at their schools 'during the week j commencing February 22 in order to i make thorough preparations for tho j year’s work. The secretary, Air W. L. Dunn, ; pointed out that the attendance of | teachers at least a week before tho j schools opened was compulsory. 1 ‘ln my opinion it is too hot for : children to attend school before tho middle of February,” said Air Maddi- j son. “I think this applies in such dis- ; tricts as Auckland and Hawke’s Bay'. Moreover, I consider that one mid-yenr holiday should suffice, instead of tho usual term holidays. I move that this idea be a recommendation to the department ” Mr J. Wauchop: I would sooner have tho children healthy than educated, and I am not keen on shorter holidays. From the health point of view I would like the youngsters to get llio double break.

Mr W. Cuthbcrtson: I move that the chairman bring down a motion at the next meeting. Mr C. R. Sainsbury: I second that. Then we will have a proper discussion. The motion was carried unanimously.
