Those present at tho monthly meeting of tho Foxton Borough Council were the Mayor (Mr M. E. Perreau) In the chair, and Councillors D. R. Barron, T. Cheffey, E. Titcombe, J. R. Middleton. W. H. Read, F. Robinson, John Ross and the Town Clerk (Mr W. Trueman). The treasurer submitted a financial report which disclosed that during the two months ended January 31, the sum of £3420 2s 5d was received and banked as follows: Cemetery account £5; District Fund account £3415 2s sd. The ledger balances at January 31 were as follow: In debit: Gasworks, £1866 15s lid; general, 606 11s 3d; Hospital Board, £129 18s 10d; library, £l3 2s Id; unemployment, relief, £l2O 15s; making a total of £2737 3s Id. In Credit: Rate arrears. £662 19s 4d; cemetery, £202 8s Id; heavy traffic, £l7l 16s 4d; Harbour Board, £3l 2s 3d; interest, £2017 7s 7d; reserves. £312 JBs 4d, town hall, £176 Os 6d; workers' dwellings £69 2s 6d; waterworks, 645 8s 9d; making a total of £4289 3s Bd. Cr. Robinson stated that Avenue road and Moutoa road needed attention. He considered the Council’s grader was too light for the work and suggested that the Manawatu County Council should bo approached with a view to having these, two roads graded with the heavy grader owned by that body. The waterworks foreman (Mr W. D. Neville) reported that 1,410,000 gallons of water was pumped at the main station, the maximum current used being 35 amps. The poundkeeper reported that during the period four head of stock were Impounded and driving fees amounting to 1/- were collected. Reporting on tho working of the gasworks, the Town Clerk stated that the amount of gas manufactured during the month of January was 233,300 feet which, with tho amount in the holder on January I, viz. 12,807 feet, made a total of 246,107 feet. During the month 27.000 feet was used at the works and there were 11,672 feet in the holder on January 31. During the month 25J tons of coal were carbonised, yielding 9,237.6 cubic feet of gas to the ton. The amount of coal in stock on January 31 was 41 tons, Bcwt. 2 qrs., and the amount of coke in stock was three The waterworks foreman drew attention to a serious leakage in one. if not two, of the artesian bores from which the town supply of water is derived. The report stated that the artesian well at the back of the pump-house began to leak at a depth of 31 feet under ground. The leak had become so bad that the well was now of no use and was causing a shortage of water. As this was the best well of the four. It would be necessary for remedial measures to be carried out at an early date. The Mayor explained tho seriousness of the position which might even necessitate a new bore being driven, as it was apparent that the existing pipe had corroded to such an extent that the water was coming to the surface outside the pipe and flowing into the river. It was decided to obtain the advice of a well-borer a 8 to the best measures to adopt to remedy the leak and a report Is to be submitted to the next meeting of the Council. Mr E. It. Booth’s offer to purchase a section in Main street, between Moutoa Buildings and the Co-operative Butchery for the sum of £4 a foot for the purpose of erecting a motor-garage, was accepted. The section has a frontage of approximately 71 feet. j Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild. Mrs John Ross presided over a business meeting of the Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild, also present being Mesdames E. Titcombe, J. Symon, W. Ogden. B. Everton, W. Baird, J. M. Thomson, R. L. Heath, D. Brooks, Miss B. Speirs and Mrs D. R, Barron (hon. secretary). The hostesses at the next meeting of the Guild, which is to be held on March 9, will be Mcsdames Symon and S. Newth. and Miss B. Speirs. Owing to Mrs J. Ross’s pending departure from Foxton it was found necessary to appoint another trustee to act on the bank account in conjunction with Mrs J. Thomson (treasurer). Mrs D. R. Barron was appointed to fill the vxacancy. It was unanimously decided that Mrs M. E. Perreau (vice-president), be invited to accept the position of president which will be left vacant by the departure of Mrs Ross. The subject of visitors being appointed to call on newcomers to the town, especially Presbyterians, was discussed and it was decided that. Mesdames Barron and R. N. Speirs be appointed visitors. Mrs Barron spoke briefly on the exceptionally long service rendered by Mrs J. Ross since tho formation of the Guild twenty-seven years ago. For twenty-two years Mrs Ross had held office as secretary and president and the work she had done in these two positions could not be measured by words. As Mrs Ross had not signified her intention of resigning from the Guild, Mrs Barron proposed Mrs Ross as a life member of the Guild. Mrs R.oss was unanimously elected a life member. Personal and General Tho friends of Mr D. Cook, of Avenue road, will regret to learn that he is at present an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital, where he underwent an operation for appendicitis a few days ago. Misses A. and E. Brown, of Chrlst-chux-ch, who have been visiting relatives in Foxton, have returned to Auckland, The work of finishing the recently levelled playing area at the local District High School was commenced on Wednesday. The area, when completed, will include two tennis courts and a basketball court. The m.v. “Foxton” arrived In port on Tuesday morning with a cargo of milling wheat from Plcton. After discharging her cargo, tho vessel sailed again for I’icton at 8 o’clock on the same evening and will return to Foxton with a further load of wheat. iri a match for the Kinneberg Feathers which was played on the Foxton Bowling Club's green on Saturday last., a Shannon rink comprising Messrs. Hemmlngson, Bovis, Hook and Grey (s.) defeated a Foxton rink comprising Tutty, Robinson. Trueman and Christie (s), the final scores being Shannon 25, Foxton 16;
