Feilding Town Hall Proposal

Mayor Proposes Plebiscite TIME SOMETHING WAS DONE At tho close of the ordinary Business at Thursday’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council tho Mayor (Mr. T. Collins) introduced tho town hall proposal, stating that he wished to remind councillors that so far no report had been received from the special committee set up in October last to go into the whole question. That coinmitteo had been asked to bring down a report but it appeared to him that a stalemate had come about and he felt that tho issue should bo taken up and citizens be given an opportunity of finalising the matter. Mr. Collins suggested that his original proposal be mado the subject of a plebiscite. Cr. A. J. Kellow said that tho council had already rejected the proposals and they could hardly be brought forward again. Cr. P. G. Guy saw do objection to the Mayor’s proposal and remarked that tho council, if it thought fit, could again reject the proposition. Cr. A. C. McCorkindale considered that the council would bo well advised to allow the town hall issuo to remain in abeyance pending finality over the ramp proposal. In the event of the ramp being built the use of the council chambers site for a town hall would be rendered impossible. The mayor then gave notice of intention to move at the next meeting of the council that a plebiscite bo taken of the ratepayers on the following three points: 1. Are you in favour of building a town hall? 2. Are you in favour of carrying out the scheme as laid down by the Mayor? 3. Are you in favour of building a town hall on any other site? The Mayor’s scheme provided for a building to be erected on the section of land with frontages to Fergusson, Stafford and McArthur streets. The building would have lock-up shops facing Ferguason street and the scheme had provision for talkie picture entertainment. The land and building was estimated to cost £BSOO. Alternative proposals advanced by councillors were that if a town hall was wanted it should be built on the site of tho present municipal chambers, the structure to incorporate the existing offices.
