Kimbolton Road Taxi Stand
NOT TO BE DISTURBED. The decision of the Feilding Borough Council to prohibit the use of Kimbol ton road as a taxi stand was referred to at Thursday night’s meeting of the council when the works committee reported that it could not seo its way clear to alter ils previous decision. This was the reply to a resolution carried at the December meeting of the council in which tho works committee was asked to consider a letter on tho subject from a legal firm, representing tho taxi interests concerned. When the Mayor (Mr. T. Collins) moved the adoption of the works committee’s report Cr. Ivellow asked where the report on the taxi stand question, asked for at the December meeting, was. that is it,” said the Mayor. •'But there is no report on the points raised by the legal firm,” said Cr. Kellow. “The committee considered that the resolution is our decision,” replied tho Mayor. Cr. Kellow was not satisfied that the works committee had reported as requested, and intimated that he would move that the letter of the legal firm bo referred back to the works committee for a report and no action be taken against the taxi drivers until the question was finalised. “I don’t agree with Cr. Kellow,” said Cr. Smith. “I don’t expect you to,” replied Cr. Kellow. Later the question was referred to again when tho Mayor said that the motion could not be accepted. Cr. P. G. Guy then proposed that the particular clause in the works committee’s report be deleted. Cr. E. Fair drew attention to tho resolution of the. December meeting which asked for a report and meanwhile no action against the taxi interests be taken. lie considered that it was the wish of the council not to disturb the taxi stand until a report was forthcoming. No report had boen received. “That’s the point,” said Cr. Guy. “No report has been made.” “The only way to get over the difficulty,” said the Mayor, “was to agree that no action bo taken meanwhile.” “I’ll propose that,” said Cr. Guy. “I object to any councillor telling me what I should do,” said Cr. V. E. Smith. “ How do councillors know what I did on tho works committee. 1 am not going to be influenced by any lawyers either as to what I should do. We have taxi stands set apart in the town specifically for the purpose and I consider that tho council should stick to its by-laws.’ Cr. A. C. McCorkindale recalled that in tho original discussion the council was evenly divided on tho subject and the motion, calling upon the taxi interests to shift to tho proper stand, was carried on the casting vote of the Mayor. Ho did not consider that any good purpose would be served in shifting the particular interests whoso enterprise was to be commended. Tho bylaws regarding taxi stands had been in operation for years but he did not feel that the particular interests were doing any harm in operating from their business premises on Kimbolton road. The council carried tho motion of the Mayor that no action be taken meanwhile. Cr. Smith asked that his vote against tho motion be recorded.
