Oroua County

MEETING OF TIIE COUNCIL. The Oroua County Council met at Feilding on Thursday, Cr. A. Campbell (chairman) presiding. There were also present: Councillors O. McElroy, 'J'. Green, W. Urecnhow, W. McLennan, A. B. Shannon. Correspondence. The following correspondence was dealt with:— From the Public Works Department, forwarding authority for £750 expenditure on account for cost of Reid’s line bridge. —Received. From the Public Works Department, requesting that construction works be expedited in order that the amount voted will be used during tho current financial, year.—Tho county clerk said that as far as maintenance works were concerned, the council w r ns up to date in the matter of claims, but in the case of the two construction works now nearing completion, the claims would be presented in a day or so. From tho Main Highways Board advising that it was not proposed to declare any new highways this year.—Received. From the New Zealand Counties’ Association, advising on industrial matters and requesting information regarding wages paid to certain w'orkT^s.— The chairman said that tho information had been supplied. From Inspector of Health, regarding tho complaint as to drain on a Makino road property and stating that the matter had been attended to. Treasurer’s Report. The county finances were reported upon as under:— Rates outstanding for three years to March 31, 1936: Native, £4.54 0s 2d, Crown, £123; European, £417 10s 6d; total, £994 10s Sd; European arrears collected, £303 Is Id; totnl rates outstanding, £691 9s 7d. Rates levied for current year, £11,536 10s sd; collected to date, £10,521 4s lOd; outstanding to date, £lOls 5s 7d. Riding Accounts. Expenditure on maintenance (western riding), £1236 3s lOd; presented for payment, £57 12s sd; expenditure on maintenance (eastern riding), £ll6B 16s 7d; presented for payment, ££7B Os Gd. Bank Balance. General account, cr., £2227 18s Bd. Engineer's Report The county engineer (Mr R. C. Harding) reported as follows: Eastern Riding: The contract for sealing threo miles of the Ashliurst-Pohan-ginn main highway has been completed except for a short length of a few chains. One day’s work should seo the completion of this contract. Tho large drain on Creamery road and on i’ohangina road as far as Port’s corner has been cleaned out. The drain on Hackott’s road has also Icon attended to. On Watershed road from Ulysses road northward ' the watertables, etc., have been attended to, but later in tho season it would bo advisable to uso the grader to trim and widen this road, and also Midland road. In tho courso of a day or two 1 propose to uso the crushing plant to supply tho necessary material for putting tho Feilding-Colyton road in order, and at tho same time it W'ould bo advisable to construct haunches and confine this section of road to the standard width for a main highway. Western Riding.—The work of preparing for sealing threo miles of Makino road has been practically completed, and as soon as tho weather is snitabie, a start will be mado with tho work of applying the tar primer coat. Tho culvert under the approach to the new hall at Ualcombe has ben widened, and a short length of protective fencing has been erected on either side. The work of rejmiring the sealed surfaces on Kimbolton and Feilding-Hahiorabe roads has been completed. Watertables on Reu Keu road and section of Makino road have been cut back with grader, and all gravel surfaces have received frequent attention. The trucks and crushing plant aro now available for ordinary maintenance work.
