Improving Halcombe Highway
PROPOSALS POR ELIMINATING CORNERS. At yesterday’s meeting of the Orouu County Council the county engineer (Mr. R. L. Harding) reported that he bad made an inspection of the FeildingHalcombe highway with tho object of preparing a report on tho proposal for the elimination of the existing difficult corners. Ho stated that ou tho length of roads between Feilding and Halcombe ten corners required attention and while land may have to be acquired by purchase in some instances he did not consider this aspect would involve the council in any great expenditure for in most of the cases the property owners would be very little effected. Surveys of tho corners had been made and provision for ten chain curves laid down. The highway could be greatly improved if this were undertaken.
The chairman (Cr. A. Campbell) agreed that the particular highway which was now carrying a steadily increasing volume of traffic required attention in the direction of eliminating the corners and while nothing could be decided just yet he hoped that it would be possible to udertake the work indicated by the engineer. With the completion of the new traffic bridge at Kakariki and the improvements to the highway at the Greatford end there was no telling that the road might ultimately be taken over as a national highway.
