Regimental Sports
TABLOID SYSTEM USED. (Special to “Times.”) WAIPUKURAU, Feb. 11. The weather was fine but cloudy for the sports meeting of the Ist Battalion, the Wellington Regiment, now in camp at Waipukurau, yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance, the fact of there being no school, due to the infantile paralysis epidemic, being responsible for the large number of children present. Many exciting finishes • were witnessed. Six teams of six men each fought for the honours which were won by the Rifle Company’s No. 1 team with 39 points. The meeting was run on the tabloid System. A new system, it is one whereby a standard is set and each man that equals or passes it gains one point for his team. Thus the team possessing the best all-round talent is given a chance to win the competition rather than the team that can produce one or two star performers. The standards set were as follow: 150yds. sprint, 20secs; 59yds. backwards race, 12secs; 50 yds. hopping race, 12 secs; high jump, 3ft. Gins; hop, step and jump, 30ft; long jump, 12ft.; and putting the shot, 20ft. Several displays were given in addition to the sports meeting. The most popular, however, were those given by tho motor-cyclists as there are several dirt-track riders with the Battalion. These consisted of exhibitions of formation riding, speed tests, and trick riding. At the conclusion of the afternoon the Pipes and Drums and the Military Band played “The Retreat” and “The Regimental March.” Results were as follow:—Rifle Company No. 1 team, 39 points, 1; Rifle Company No. 2 team, 37 points, 2; Support Company No. 2 team and H.Q. Wing No. 2 team 3 equal, with 36 points each.
