Sharemilkers Form Union
DEPUTATION TO MINISTER. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. Introduced by Mr. C. L. Hunter, M.P., a large number of sharemilkers waited on the Minister of Labour (Hon. H. T. Armstrong) to complain of the lack of protection afforded them in their conditions of employment. Mr C. Gough (Pahiatun), secretary of the Wellington Dairy Factory Workers’ Union and organiser for the Bharemilkers’ Union which is in process of formation, pointed out that this section of workers was subject to all increased costs, including labour, under the agricultural workers’ legislation. “The benefit of increased prices has left them no better off than previously,” Mr Gough said, “and to-day conditions are so bad that the men are forced to organise and ask that legislation be enacted in order that a living standard wage will be provided in future.” The Minister, replying, admitted that sharemilkers had been left out as far as the protection given to all other sections of workers was concerned. He promised to give every consideration to the proposals of th£ deputation.
