Dannevirke's Fine Stock Show

Additional Prize List Yesterday saw the conclusion of one of the finest stock exhibitions the Dannevirke A. and P. Association has staged in its many years of catering for. Southern Hawke’s Bay breeders. Fortunately the weather cleared alter heavy overnight rain and enabled patrons to enjoy the wealth of pleasure that accompanies these functions. The large attendance must have been very pleasing for the show committee as well as those conducting trade exhibits and sideshows. A feature of yesterday’s display was the parade of stock in the oval followed with keen interest by a packed grandstand and fence line banked several rows deep. Then came the jumping competitions with long lists of competitors and sheep dog trials. A Maori concert was scheduled for the evening. Further awards are as follows:

Owners of dogs will bo interested in the following comments of Captain Hughes, F.R.G.S., of Ceylon, one of the judges of the Kennel Club’s section:— On going over the judgments after the show was over, Captain Hughes did not consider that he should alter his decisions in any instance. On the whole he considered the entries were exceed* iugJy good and was very favourably impressed with the greyhounds, cockers', and terriers in particular. He said that! the dogs here compare very favourably with anything in the East, despite the fact that some of the wealthy princes and rajahs were prepared to pay any amount for big English winners. He thought that good stock from the Oil Country would further improve al. breeds, b*ifc would advise fanciers not to import second best stock, as results were so often disappointing. He would like to bring to the notice of all exhibitors the two outstanding English dog magazines, Our Dogs and The Dog World, both of which would repay careful study. Only a few exhibito/ - showed their dogs to best advantage and there were dogs that might have gained higher places if they had befr better handled in the ring. It was th« exhibitor who kept the dog well in th« judge’s eye who merited the closest in spection. The judge had only a limited amount of time, and if the good points of a dog wore well presented by it* owner it wont a long way towards securing the coveted red ribbon. Exhibitors should remember that the judgment was merely the judge’s own personal opinion, and it should not deter them in the slightest from exhibiting at other shows if their fancied favourite secured only second place. There may have been some fault in the handling, of which the handler was not conscious, which presented the dog’s worst points to the judge. Captain Hughes considered it a very bad mistake to havo classes with, only

one entry. In other parts of the world whore he had exhibited and judged there were no classes of less than three entries, and at a great many shows if there were not enough of one sex to make up the required number, bitches and dogs were classed together and it made the competition more interesting A striking point in this connection was that it was possible for a dog to be entered in three or four classes and be a lone entry. If it was awarded a first prize in each class it jjras more than likely that the owner would be convinced that he had a champion and be bitterly disappointed when he was put down when ho met other dogs in a big ger entry. 1 Not only that, but from a breeder’s point of view it lent itself to abuse, as the owner of a dog winning in this manner was quite at liberty to advertise something like this:—“At stud: Fido. Four first prizes at the Dannevirke Show!” This would be misleading ns the owner would not add “Only one in his class.”
