British Music Society

SUCCESSFUL YEAR RECORDED. (Hpecial to 4 ‘Times.’’) WAIPUKURAU, Feb. 10. Although a hazardous venture, .the formation of a branch of the British Alusic Society in Waipukurau has been a great success. This was clearly shown by the first annual report and balancesheet presented to a meeting of that organisation in fhe Women’s Rest Rooms last night. Airs. Gerald Wilson presided. Miss N, G. Guilliard, the retiring secretary, said, in presenting the report, that at the last annual meeting of the society piano, vocal, string'and gramophone groups were formed, a choral and children’s group being added later. A great deal of work had been accomplished by each of tho groups, said Miss Guilliard, though perhaps that of the choral group called for special mention in that, owing to the shortage of male voices, that group had had to carry on as a women’s glee. This it had done with, credit, its items being a treat for all who had heard them. The leader, Mrs. P, A- Riddle, was to be congratulated on her fine management of this group. Early Difficulties. Mention was made of the difficulties which, faced the society in its early activities. They had been fortunate, however, in obtaining tho use of the Women’s Rest Rooms which had proved most suitable. The society had had trouble, too, in obtaining a piano. “The society/’ continued Miss Guilliard, * ‘ cannot express too strongly its thanks to Mrs. Paul Hunter for having loaned it her piano meantime, and thus enabling us to carry on independently.” The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £l9 2s Sd. Membership for the past season has been in the vicinity of 80. It was decided to hold the first opera concert about the middle of March. Election of Officers. The election of officers resulted as follow:—Chairman, Mrs. P. A. Riddle; joint secretary and treasurer, Airs. F. R. Me William and Miss A. M. Robertson; committee, Alesdames J. L.
