Veterans Day on Bowling Green
TWELVE RINKS IN CENTRE TOURNAMENT. Tho annual tournament for veteran bowlers conducted under tlio auspices of tho Man aw at u Howling Centro commenced yesterday ou the Takaro greens. Mr. J. A. Nash (president of the Centre), in opening tho proceedings, said that he was pleased to see so many veterans at their important fixture When tho minimum ago was 70 tho response was so poor that at a meeting o± tho executive it was considered necessary to either reduce the ago to 65 or abandon the event. It was decided to reduce tho age limit mid as a result twelve rinks had been secured. Mr. Nash then called upon Mr. J. Bartholomew, one of tho oldest bowlers in the district, to reply on behalf of tho veterans. Mr. Bartholomew said that a veteran's game was wanted. What was the use of reducing the age limit, when, with u little effort, clubs could have procured enough bowlers of 70 years to make a rink. Each game was of seven heads which accounts for the small scores. Details were:— First game: Mills (Feilding) 13 v. Stephenson (Palmerston North) 7; Hunter (Pahiatua) 7 v. After live games the aggregate was as follows:—Curry, 4 wins,* 1 loss; Davidson, 4 wins, 1 Joss; Hunter, 4 wins, 1 loss; Robinson, 4 wins, 1 loss; Morgan, 4 wins, 1 loss; {Stephenson, 2 wins, 3 losses; Teale, 2 wins, 3 losses; Holdaway, 2 wins, 3 losses; James, 2 wins, 3 losses; Mills, 1 win, 4 losses; Curry, 1 win, 4 losses; Williamson, no wins, no Josses. The lirst live will play off to decide the winner, on Friday, February 26, at 2 p.m. on the Takaro green. Rain interfered with tho latter part of the tourney yesterday and it had to l<o postponed (owing to visits to be made by Centre clubs to Wanganui and Wellington). The draw for semi-finals which will mean two more matches to decide the winning rink, is as follows:—Morgan v. Hunter, Robinson v. Davidson, Wallace a bye.
