Values Hold in a Dragging Sale

FAT CATTLE YARDING AT STORTFORD. (Special to 44 Times.”) HASTINGS, Last Night. Compared with last week’s sale, today’s yarding of fat cattle at Sfcortford Lodge was considerably smaller, and generally lacked quality. Ox beef was confined to two heavy Aberdeen Anguscross bullocks, one of which only was of prime quality. Cows predominated in the yarding, and the quality of these was much below that of last week’s yarding. Many of the pens were aged sorts, plain finished and of secondary quality, and butchers showed a reluctance to buy them, Values were fully maintained at last week’s rates which are well above normal levels. Although such high values wero obtained there was very little life in the selling, which was inclined to drag. Fen after pen of cows of secondary quality were offered, with the result that there was little to encourage any active bidding. Despite the high values, some lines were passed at values which would have made particularly good selling. 26/- FOR STORE SHEEP, MARKET LITTLE CHANGED. The large yarding of 24,500 head of store sheep mot witii steady selling, the market showing little change on last week’s values. Lambs constituted half the yarding, there being about 3000 wethers, tho balance being breeding ewes. From Poporangi Station was a large draft of forward wethers, which was the principal entry. It made good selling. Several other pens also sold well, the top price being 26s for a well-done entry. The breeding ewes comprised many lots showing age and were poorly mouthed. The best lines mado values practically on a par with the values at last week’s ewe fair, but poorer sorts were easier. Fat and forward wellgrown easy-finishing lambs sold well up to late rates, but a slower sale met the second-quality lines.
