LATE EDITION
FEDERAL GOVER3!4MENT SEEKS WIDER POWERS. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyrlaht. Received Wednesday, 2 a.m. SYDNEY, Feb. 9. What has now become known as tho marketing referendum campaign arising out of the Privy Council’B decision last year upsetting the Commonwealth marketing powers, was officially launchin Sydney to-night in a broadcast throughout Australia. The chief speakers were Mr. Lyons, Prime Minister, Dr. Earle Page, leader of the Country Party, and Messrs. Stevens and Hogan, Premiers respectively of New South Wales and Victoria. Their arguments were directed to the disabilities occasioned to the rural community by tho Privy Council’s decision and to the necessity of amendments to the Constitution to correct the position. The speakers strongly urged a yes voto to the Commonwealth Government’s proposals, also a yes vote to a further request that the Commonwealth should have complete control over aviation, which hitherto has not existed under the Constitution. Reports are current that in at least two States a negative vote will be recorded. The Labour Party of New South Wales intends to combat the Commonwealth Government’s proposals.
