Garters at a Church Dance

MAN COMPLAINS ABOUT QUERY TO WOMEN An alleged remark about women’s garters during a dance at a Roman Catholic hail was the subject of one of the objections made to Middlesex County Licensing Committee, England, against the renewal of a dance license. Rev. William Gordon applied for a renewal of the music and dancing license of St. Jamo’s Hall, Radnor road, Twickenham. Mr J. Stephenson, on behalf of some residents, objected to the unrestricted granting of the license. He said the main ground of complaint was noise. On one occasion Mr Bray, a resident, heard an announcement through a microphone which could not be offensive in tho light and movement of a dance hall but which might be more likely to disgust than amuse a man trying to get some sleep. Mr Bray explained that the M.C. was asking if any woman had pink garters, or if any woman had blue garters. He was asking the women what type of garters they wore. The committee renewed the license foi three months—subject to certain restrictions as to time and noise.

The assistant priest of St. James, Rev. C. B. Flood, told the Daily Sketch: “I believe the actual remark was, ‘Will all ladies with blue garters take part in this dance?’

“I am not excusing it, but it was made, I understand, by a would-be funny young mau and I am sure that no harm was meant.”
