Fireman Charged With Assault
SEQUEL TO SCUFFLE ON STEAMER Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, February 6. Serious head injuries were suffered by Edward Curtis, aged 60, a married man, when he fell 10ft- down the hold during a scuffle aboard the ship Port Townsville last evening. The incident had a sequel in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when James Francis Loftus, fireman, aged 40, limped into the dock to face a charge of common assault. On the application of DetectiveSergeant McHugh, the charge was amended to one of assault with intent to do grievious bodily harm to Curtis, and that he did actual bodily harm. Accused was remanded until February Sth. Asking lor bail, Mr. R. A. Winger, who appeared for accused, :<aid Loftus had suffered injury and required immediate attention. Mr. McHugh said that-Gurtis was in a very serious condition and Loftus could get all the attention he needed in jail. Bail was refused.
