Hints on Washing Blankets
Blankets should bo washed ou a day when they can be dried out of doors, as exposure to strong artificial heat spoils them. Blankets which have not been washed before should be soaked in two or three changes of cold water before they are washed. Otherwise soak them iu a warm lather for about half an hour. If the blankets are coloured, add a little borax to the water; if they are white or cream, ammonia can with advantage be put in tho water. Do not rub more than necessary, and do not use too much soap. Peroxide in the last rinsing water will keep white blankets a good colour, and glycerine will keep the wool soft. A wringer with rubber rollers which have not been tightened much will not harm the blankets.
When hanging out, see that the blankets are folded in halves over the line and that the edges are pulled together, or they will sag at the corners. Turn while drying. Cellular blankets should be pulled out well so that the mesh is kept open. Do not iron blankets. When dry, hang over the clothes lino and beat to bring up the fluff. To store, wrap in newspaper with plenty of naphtha balls or other moth preventive. If the edges of the paper are pasted down it will be impossible for moths to get in.
