MEN IN MOTOR SMASH STORY TOLD TO POLICE Saying that they had been found guilty of a conspiracy to defeat the ends, of justice by manufacturing false evidence, Mr Justice Goddard, at Leeds Assizes, recently sentenced Irvine Stottj aged 33, of Bradford, and Harold Daniel, aged 27, of Shipley, each to nine months' imprisonment. Stott was also convicted of the man- j slaughter of a motor-cyclist, Thomas j Vincent Howley, by running him down at Eldwick. On this charge Stott was ordered an additional six months, and he was disqualified from holding a licence until June, 1940. At the time of the accident Stott had Daniel as a passenger, and he drove off. Later that night both men, to screen themselves, reported that the car had been stolen, and next morning it was found abandoned on Baildon Moor. In the witness-box both men declared that they were not at the spot where the tragedy occurred, and reiterated that the car was stolen. They also sought to set up an alibi. After tliey had been found guilty, Mr Justice Goddard observed:—“The story you told the police and which you have sworn to, is a pack of lies from beginning to end. " Addressing Stott, tho Judge went on: “If you had had the manliness to stand by and stop you might have been able to give some explanation, and #you mignt never have been convicted ot manslaughter, but you gave no explanation. “You then set out with Doniel to attempt to stage this elaborate plan. A conspiracy to defeat tho ends of justice by manufacturing false evidence is a verv grave and serious crime."
