Shipping Strike Ends
MEN ORDERED TO RETURN TO WORK. Received Friday, 7.5 p.m. SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 5. The shipping strike was officially end--4 this afternoon by tho joint strike committee and the men have been ordered to return to work at eight to-morrow morning. A referendum overwhelmingly authorised their return. Representatives of seven maritime unions are expected to call membership meetings immediately and formally inform the men that the strike is ended. Shipping lines are continuing their bookings in prospect of early sailings although the situation may be complicated by the new longshoremen’s strike at British Columbia. DECISION GREETED WITH CHEEKS Received Friday 10.30 p.m. BAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 5. Forty thouaand men and 239 ships are Affected. Cheers sounded along the rain drenched waterfront when the decision to return was announced. Business interests have estimated that the cost of the strike at 686,000,000 dollars and that the end rescued from slow stagnation thousands of companies and nine hundred exporting offices. It is estimated that fifty million dollars worth of cargo is waiting movement across the piers. At Los Angeles it is reported that 234,000 tons of cargo and eighty-two ships are waiting. PROSPECTS GOOD FOR ENDING MOTOR STRIKE Received Friday, 7.20 p.m. DETROIT, Feb. 5. Following the end of the second conference without results this aftornoon, a telephone message received from President Roosevelt that it should meet again, resulted in a night session. The parties are optimistic. Mr Murphy said things look very good. In the meantime, threat of violence at Flint again became an actuality when the police began to swear in a thousand special officers. The strikers charged the city officials and broke yesterday’s agreement with them concerning the disbandment of the so-called vigilantes. General Motors counsel consulted Judge Gadola but it is declared have not asked for an order for contempt of the court authorising the expulsion of sit down strikers.
