Tube Railways to Be Made Noiseless

SATISFACTORY PROGRESS REPORTED (British Official Wireless.) Received Friday, 7 p.m. RUGBY, Feb. 5. Noise in London tube railways is to be reduced by halt at au estimated cost of £IOO,OOO. Experiments for the reduction of wheel or rail noise are now reported complete and all rail sections on the 440 truck-miles of the system and on all planned extensions are to be welded by a special process. The final solution of the second half of the noise problem, that Of absorbing as much as possible of the noise that is produced, has not yet been reached. Experiments have been made in a section of tho tube with asbestos composition mattresses raised to the height of the floor of the train along the tunnel walls. For a number of reasons, however, they have been found unsatisfactory for general purposes and experiments with other materials are to continue.
